by Nigel Walley - May 2009
The Unboxing Archive
Decipher's Managing Director, Nigel Walley, takes a look at the new Sky HD EPG and discusses the possible implications of the changes to the broadcast world.
This is a significant event in the UK broadcast world, as any change in the context through which consumers find television channels can have an impact on audience size and behaviour. In particular, there have been concerns that the EPG that arrives out of the box, reduces the number of channels on the main page, from 10 to 6, and changes the routes that consumers use to find genre based channels.. The features discussed are:
- Improved layout and added functionality that Sky have built in to the new EPG
- The changes in channel presentation on the main page, and the impact on genre channels
- Navigational changes around recordings and use of the planner, and the likelihood of increasing use of recorded content.
- The current and future potential for introducing advertising content onto the EPG, to bring the Sky EPG in line with the new InView/Freeview EPG and with Virgin.
