Distribution and Devices

This session is intended as a non-technical examination of the development path for convergence and device integration in an increasingly connected TV landscape, explaining the current and future evolution to the home media infrastructure.
The session investigates purchase and ownership trends for consumer devices, the rise of the home gateway, DNLA and other ‘enabling’ technologies, mobile and the development plans of the major device manufacturers and TV platforms.
Highlights of the Session:
The Decipher moderators will use live examples, video summaries and case studies to explore the following areas:
Purchase and ownership trends - Overview of ownership in key CE products, the acceleration of the purchase cycle, drivers of technology take up and forecast trends in device ownership.
- Device hierarchy – The growth in ‘connectivity’, TV at the heart and integration of smart devices
- DNLA and other ‘enabling’ technologies - Introduction to Digital Lifestyle Network Alliance, HbbTV and the rise of the TV browser and an overview of proprietary networking technologies of the major manufacturers
- Development plans - Overview and evaluation of future plans of the major device manufacturers and TV platforms including; Sony, Samsung & LG, Sky and Virgin Media, other IPTV Platforms
- Mobile Devices and Content & Communication - Device support for 2 and 3 screen content strategies and strategies around search and discovery.
Session Outcomes:
This session is intended to build on the Landscape Overview and provide participants with a deeper understanding of the consumer device landscape in the home, showing how consumer electronics are converging to create a new ‘home media ecosystem’.
